5 New York behavioral health updates

Here are five updates on the state of behavioral healthcare in New York reported by Becker’s since Feb. 2:

1. Jawonio, an organization that aids individuals with disabilities and behavioral health issues, was granted $2.2 million from the state to build an 8,000-square-foot behavioral health facility in Nanuet.  

2. New York City pharmacist Daniel Russo, PharmD, pleaded guilty to opioid distribution and tax charges. Dr. Russo, who owned and operated a drug store called Russo’s Pharmacy, admitted to possession and distribution of oxycodone and related conspiracy charges, as well as filing false business and personal income tax returns. 

3. The department of family medicine at the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences received a federal grant to assist in the training of primary care residents in mental and behavioral healthcare.

4. Gov. Kathy Hochul outlined her more than $1 billion, multiyear initiative to overhaul the state’s “strained” and “suffering” mental healthcare system. Here is a breakdown of the plan. 

5. Peekskill, N.Y.-based Sun River Health was granted $3.8 million to expand two of its community care centers. The organization will use $1.8 million of the grant for The Alpha School, its location in New York City, and the remaining $2 million to add urgent care services and expand primary care at its location in Beacon, N.Y.
