The San Antonio State Hospital's $357 million replacement facility has opened.
The three-story, 454,000-square-foot psychiatric hospital includes a 300-bed non-maximum security unit, according to an April 9 Texas Health and Human Services Commission news release. Design features of the new facility include single-person rooms, the use of natural light throughout patient rooms and common areas, and outdoor spaces to promote healing and recovery.
Construction on the replacement hospital began in 2020.
The hospital provides inpatient adult psychiatric services to people in more than 50 counties in South Texas, according to the release. It serves 270 people annually.
