According to an Oct. 13 news release from the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department, the department received a call that “several unruly patients had begun a riot and had taken control over a section of the hospital.”
The patients were trying to escape the facility, according to Texarkana Police. Officers at the scene found “several staff members were trapped inside a nurse’s station inside the facility, surrounded by unruly juvenile patients,” the department said.
Officers were able to deescalate the situation without any major injuries, according to the Texarkana Police Department. Three male juveniles, two aged 15 and one aged 17, were taken into custody after the incident.
Riverview Behavioral Hospital is owned by Franklin, Tenn.-based Acadia Healthcare.
“The well-being and privacy of our patients and staff are vital to Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital,” a spokesperson for Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital said. “We appreciated the swift support of local law enforcement on Sunday. All of our patients remain safe, and their treatment programs are continuing uninterrupted. Riverview Behavioral Health will not comment further.”
