211-bed California psychiatric hospital to close

Good Samaritan Hospital is set to close the inpatient psychiatric facility at its Mission Oaks location in Los Gatos, Cal., in August, according to a July 2 report from The Mercury News.

Nashville-based HCA Healthcare, which operates the Mission Oaks location, cited staffing shortages as the driving force behind the closure of the facility and its pediatric intensive care unit. With the closure, Santa Clara county will lose 18 inpatient beds.

The county is already struggling to meet its population's behavioral health needs, with just 0.26 public psychiatric beds available per 2,000 residents. The county would need to add around 960 beds to properly serve the population, the report said.
