15 behavioral health closures in 2023

Here are 15 shuttered behavioral health centers and units that Becker's reported on in 2023:

  1. Ascension closed the psychiatric observation unit at Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, Kan. 
  2. HCA Florida Trinity West Hospital, a mental health hospital in New Port Richey, closed. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare said the August closure was in response to evacuations ordered during Hurricane Idalia. Six patients were transferred to other facilities. Following the temporary closure, HCA decided to close the facility permanently and transfer mental health services to other HCA facilities in the area. 
  3. Ascension Providence closed the DePaul Center and its outpatient behavioral health clinic in Waco, Texas, in December. Ascension Providence, part of St. Louis-based Ascension, said it would continue to serve mental and behavioral patients in crisis in the emergency department. Patients will receive care in a seven-bed "green unit" before being discharged or transferred to other facilities. 
  4. Baxter Regional Behavioral Health Clinic in Mountain Home, Ark., closed its doors to patients.
  5. St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston closed its Center for Behavioral Health, citing the cost of providing services. 
  6. PeaceHealth closed Sacred Heart Medical Center University District in Eugene, Ore., due to underutilization.
  7. Merit Health, based in Mableton, Ga., closed the only behavioral health unit in Mississippi's Warren County, transferring its 50 beds to Merit Health Central Mississippi in Jackson.
  8. Good Samaritan Hospital closed the inpatient psychiatric facility at its Mission Oaks location in Los Gatos, Calif., citing staffing shortages.
  9. Baystate Health, based in Springfield, Mass., closed psych units and behavioral health services at some of its locations to make way for its standalone behavioral health hospital.
  10. Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital in Tukwila, Wash., closed its doors in July but was later purchased and reopened by the state government.
  11. Froedtert Health, based in Wauwatosa, Wis., closed the behavioral health unit at its Menomonee Falls hospital.
  12. Trinity Health closed the adult inpatient behavioral health unit at its hospital in Chelsea, Mich., with some beds being relocated to other Trinity Health facilities.
  13. Greenville, N.C.-based ECU Health closed its behavioral health inpatient unit and five of its clinics following a $46 million fiscal loss in 2022.
  14. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Delphi Behavioral Health Group closed all four of its locations in Florida.

Redlands (Calif.) Community Hospital closed its behavioral health unit due to financial unsustainability.
