13 states increasing their number of state psychiatric hospital beds

Although the numbers of state psychiatric hospital beds have largely either decreased or remained stagnant across 37 states, some states increased their number of beds between 2016 and 2022.

Here are the states that have increased the number of state psychiatric hospital beds, according to data from the Treatment Advocacy Center:

1. Hawaii: 32% increase

2. Washington: 23%

3. West Virginia: 17%

4. Illinois: 14%

5. Louisiana: 12%

6. California: 10%

T-7. Maine: 6%

T-7. Massachusetts: 6%

9. Georgia: 4%

T-10. New York: 3%

T-10. Pennsylvania: 3%

12. Oregon: 2%

13. Alabama: 1%
