King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services is one of the largest behavioral health providers in the U.S.
The for-profit company also operates 27 acute care hospitals in the U.S. The company brought in $717.8 million in profit in 2023.

- In 2023, UHS served 730,000 total patients in its behavioral health facilities.
- UHS operates 186 inpatient behavioral health facilities in the U.S., and 144 facilities in the United Kingdom.
- In the first six months of 2024, UHS brought in $3.4 billion in revenue from its behavioral health facilities. Revenue in the company's behavioral health segment was up 10.7% year over year.
- Behavioral health accounted for 43% of UHS' revenue in 2022 and 2023, with acute care accounting for the other 57%.
- Matthew Peterson is executive vice president and President of UHS' behavioral health division. Mr. Peterson has held the role since 2019, and most recently served as chief operating officer of Optum Government.
- Mr. Peterson was paid $4 million in total compensation in 2023. UHS CEO Mark Miller was paid $14.4 million in total compensation.
