Yale receives $4M for LGBTQ-affirming mental health care

Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn., have received a $4 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to develop therapeutic interventions for LGBTQ community centers nationwide, Yale Daily News reported Sept. 8.

The five-year grant will be awarded to researchers at Yale's LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative, who will administer affirmative cognitive behavioral therapy to over 90 community centers and 540 mental health providers.

"LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT recognizes LGBTQ+ people's exposure to identity-related stressors,” research leader John Pachankis, PhD, said. "It teaches LGBTQ+ people to undo harmful legacies that led them to be more ashamed, and replace them with new, empowered ways of thinking and being."
