Master of Social Work enrollment grows 60% over decade: 5 things to know

As social workers increasingly take on clinical and leadership roles, enrollment in Master of Social Work programs has grown by more than 60% over the past decade, according to the Council on Social Work Education. 

Online accessibility, specialized programs and higher earning potential are fueling a shift among Bachelor of Social Work graduates seeking advanced credentials.

Here are five things to know:

  1. Many states require a master’s degree for roles such as licensed clinical social worker, which allows for clinical practice and private practice ownership. 
  1. Median salaries for advanced roles such as social and community service managers can reach $77,000 annually, compared to $53,940 for entry-level roles. 
  1. Master of Social Work programs offer specialized tracks in areas including healthcare, child welfare, school social work and policy advocacy, aligning with trends in telehealth, trauma-informed care and workforce mental health.
  1. Online programs are expanding Master of Social Work enrollment, providing a flexible format for better work-life balance.
  1. Overall social work employment is projected to grow 6% through 2034, with healthcare and mental health roles expected to grow 10% to 12%.
