United Soccer League launches mental health initiative

The United Soccer League has launched a mental health platform focused on raising awareness on the importance of mental health within the communities where the league plays.

The "Need Support?" program centers around a partnership with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, according to a May 12 news release. The lifeline is administered by Vibrant Emotional Health, a national network of local crisis centers, and funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Throughout the 2023 season, USL and its clubs will raise awareness for this resource through a Lifeline-themed armband that team captains wore during the launch weekend and can choose to wear at any game throughout the season.

Other elements to the partnership include a 988 Lifeline public service announcement, in-stadium LEDs, online resources, social posts and a 988 Lifeline-led webinar for USL headquarters employees to help them recognize a mental health crisis among their colleagues and friends.
