The worst states for mental healthcare: 2024

Nevada is the worst state for prevalence of mental illness and access to care in 2024, according to Mental Health of America’s annual ‘State of Mental Health in America’ report.

The report, published July 29, ranks states and Washington, D.C.,  on 15 measures, including adults with any mental illness, the number of adults with mental illness who are uninsured, and youth with at least one major depressive episode in the past year. 

States ranked 39-51 have a  higher prevalence of mental illness and lower access to care, according to Mental Health of America. 

The report uses data from 2022. The rankings from one year are not comparable to previous years, as the methodology has been updated.
