The 10 best states for mental health

Vermont is the best state for mental healthcare in the U.S., according to a ranking from Forbes Advisor.

The publication issued its annual ranking of the best and worst states for mental healthcare May 3. 

Forbes Advisor scored states’ mental healthcare on seven metrics, including the share of adults with a mental illness who do not receive treatment and the share of adults with a mental illness who do not receive adequate treatment. 

The ranking includes the percentage of adults struggling with mental health who could not see a doctor due to cost, the percentage of adults with mental illness who are uninsured, and other metrics. 

Here are the top 10 states for mental healthcare, per Forbes Advisor: 

  1. Vermont
  2. Montana
  3. Illinois 
  4. Connecticut 
  5. Kentucky 
  6. Rhode Island 
  7. Pennsylvania 
  8. Massachusetts 
  9. Wisconsin 
  10. District of Columbia
