Study identifies behavioral risk factors for teen suicide

Social withdrawal could contribute to a higher risk of suicidal thoughts, according to a study published Jan. 25 in JAMA Network Open.

The study, which used questionnaire responses from parents of 2,780 adolescents that were born between 2002 and 2004, was focused on symptoms including social withdrawal, somatic complaints, anxiety or depression, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, delinquent behavior and aggressive behavior.

The study found that the adolescents in the study who experienced social withdrawal and somatic symptoms while growing up were roughly two to three times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts at age 16.
