OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Teens with built-in safeguards aimed at reducing exposure to potentially harmful or developmentally inappropriate content for users under 18.

The protections address higher-risk areas including self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities and explicit sexual or graphic content, according to an Aug. 18 news release from the company.

Parents with linked teen accounts can receive safety notifications in limited high-risk situations. The experience also includes break reminders intended to encourage teens to step away from ChatGPT.

OpenAI said ChatGPT for Teens should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence or imply it has feelings or consciousness. The safeguards are designed to reinforce real-world relationships.

The company is also evaluating its models against teen-specific standards covering self-harm, eating disorders, violence, age-restricted goods and services and sexual content.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
