The training and employment of peer counselors aims to provide a connection between caregivers with lived experience in mental health and substance abuse struggles and traditionally difficult to reach populations. Additionally, the program acts as a method of recovery for its trainees.

NYC Health + Hospitals currently employs 86 peers on staff across the health system — the largest hospital-based peer workforce in the city, according to the release. The Peer Academy program consists of both self-directed hours for state certification and structured training, including six weeks of classroom training and a full-time, hospital-based internship with rotations in various mental health units.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
