Nurse mental health worse than height of pandemic, survey says

Dallas-based AMN Healthcare has released its 2023 Healthcare Survey of Registered Nurses, which found that nurses are experiencing worse mental health than in 2021.

The study surveyed 18,000 nurses across the nation and revealed that more nurses are experiencing a larger degree of stress, with 65 percent of nurses citing they experienced a great deal or a lot of stress in 2021 and 81 percent in 2023.

Additionally, nurses who strongly agreed or somewhat agreed that they feel burnt out and emotionally drained rose by 15 percentage points between 2021 and 2023.

Nurses surveyed also said they are receiving less support from their employer, with only a quarter of respondents responding that their employer supports a culture of wellness.

Overall, one-third of respondents said they are likely to leave the profession, an increase of 7 percentage points from 2021. Nurses' satisfaction ratings also dropped to 71 percent after remaining between 80 percent and 85 percent for the past decade.
