NCAA publishes open letter to student-athletes on mental health

The National Collegiate Athletic Association published an open letter to student-athletes on mental health.

The letter, which was signed by the NCAA Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees and the NCAA Board of Governors Student-Athlete Engagement Committee, affirms the NCAA's commitment to addressing the growing mental health concerns for student-athletes.

The letter was published in response to data from the most recent NCAA Student-Athlete Well-Being Survey, which said student-athletes were continuing to exhibit rates of mental exhaustion, anxiety and feelings of depression similar to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The letter also referenced the recent addition of mental health to the association's constitution, which now requires participating institutions to "facilitate an environment that reinforces physical and mental health within athletics by ensuring access to appropriate resources and open engagement with respect to physical and mental health."
