In 2022, 29.8% of adolescents received some form of mental health treatment, while 21.8% of those 18 and older received some form of treatment.
The survey, published Nov. 16, which is conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, polls a nationally representative sample of children and adults on their use of substances and mental health.
Here are the most common forms of mental health treatment among four age groups:
12 to 17
Any mental health treatment: 29.8%
Inpatient treatment: 3%
Outpatient treatment: 23%
Outpatient, other than general medical clinic or physician’s office: 20%
Prescription medication: 12.8%
Telehealth treatment: 13.8%
Prison, jail or juvenile detention center: 1.2%
18 to 25
Any mental health treatment: 26.7%
Inpatient treatment: 2.1%
Outpatient treatment: 17.8%
Outpatient, other than general medical clinic or physician’s office: 15.5%
Prescription medication: 17.5%
Telehealth treatment: 17.2%
Prison, jail of juvenile detention center: 0.8%
26 to 49
Any mental health treatment: 24.5%
Inpatient treatment: 1.3%
Outpatient treatment: 16%
