The team is on call throughout the Olympics, Fortune reported July 25. Athletes can schedule an appointment with a counselor or find them in the Olympic village if they need support.
All of the clinicians employed by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee are certified mental performance consultants in addition to their other credentials.
Here are some of the senior mental health providers supporting athletes in Paris:
- Jessica Bartley, PsyD, is the senior director of psychological services. She received a Psy.D in clinical psychology with an emphasis in sport and performance psychology and behavioral therapy from the University of Denver. Dr. Bartley previously counseled student athletes at the University of Denver, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbus-based Ohio State University. She joined the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee in 2020.
- Angel Brutus, PsyD, is one of two lead psychological services providers for Team USA. She joined the organization in 2021 and previously directed counseling and sport psychology at Starkville-based Mississippi State University. She also managed a private practice in Atlanta. Dr. Brutus received her PsyD in sport performance psychology from the University of Arizona Global Campus.
- Emily Clark, PsyD, is a senior psychological services provider for the Olympic committee and is licensed clinical and sport psychologist. She received her PsyD in clinical psychology from the University of Denver, and has previously worked with both NCAA and Olympic athletes.
- Karen Cogan, PhD, is also a lead psychological services provider. She joined the Olympic committee in 2010, and has attended seven Olympic Games as a sport psychologist. She works with acrobatics and combat athletes, and was a competitive gymnast who competed for the University of California-Los Angeles. She received her PhD in counseling psychology from Ohio State University.
- Alex Cohen, PhD, is a senior psychological services provider working with winter sports athletes. He joined the Olympic committee in 2011, and previously practiced psychology in Athens, Ga. Dr. Cohen received his PhD in counseling psychology from Tallahassee-based Florida State University.
- Sean McCann, PhD, is a senior psychological services provider. He joined the Olympic committee in 1991 and has supported several Olympic Games. Dr. McCann earned his PhD in clinical psychology from Honolulu-based University of Hawaii.
