The U.S. received an “F” grade on new parental support, paid leave and childcare measures in the 2026 Maternal Mental Health State Report Cards, according to a May 27 report from the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health.
The report evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 27 measures in four domains: screening and detection, providers and treatment, policy and payment, and parental support. The parental support category was added in 2026 and measures paid leave and childcare policies.
Overall, the nation earned a “C” grade improving from a “C-” in the previous year’s report. Thirty-one states earned fewer than 1 star in the category, while only 14 states earned 2 or more stars. Maine earned the highest parental support score at 3.5 stars.
