Some states are making incremental progress in overall maternal mental health, but no state has received a grade of “A” yet, according to a May 14 Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health report.
To issue the 2025 Maternal Mental Health state report cards, the organization measured states across 20 measures in three key areas: providers and programs; screening, results, requirements and reimbursement; and insurance coverage and treatment reimbursement. States were graded on a point scale that coordinates with a letter grade: A = 38+ points; B+ = 35-37 points; B = 29-4; etc. Read more about the methodology here.
In general, more states ranked higher than in previous years, with 19 states earning Ds and Fs, compared to 29 states in 2024. However, only five states received a “B,” and no states received an “A.” Only two states received an “F.”
