The “Hospitalist Lifestyle & Happiness Report 2023: Contentment Amid Stress” surveyed 9,175 providers in more than 29 specialties from June 28 to Oct. 3 about how they are managing their mental health and happiness.
The collective mental health in the U.S. has declined rapidly in recent years, with rates of suicidality, mental illness and substance use on the rise in many demographics, including medical providers. Sixty-three percent of physicians reported being burned out and 23 percent reported experiencing depression.
Here are the top six methods hospitalists reported using to maintain their happiness and mental health, starting with the most popular response:
- Activities and hobbies (eg. reading, cooking)
- Exercising
- Spending time with family and friends
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating better
- Therapy
