HHS publishes national standards for mental health peer workers

HHS, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, has published a set of national model standards for peer support certification for substance use, mental health and family peer workers.

The standards were designed to accelerate universal adoption, recognition and integration of the peer workforce across all elements of the healthcare system, according to a June 6 news release.

The standards are aimed toward peer workers who work to help others based on their own lived experiences with addressing substance use or mental health issues. SAMHSA collaborated with federal, state, tribal, territorial and local partners, including peer specialists, to develop the national model standards, the release said.
