Cigna defines vitality as the ability to pursue life with health, strength and energy. The measure takes into account physical, social and emotional health, along with other factors.

Cigna’s Evernorth Research Institute surveyed over 5,000 U.S. adults 18 and older for the report.

Here are 5 findings to note from Cigna’s Vitality in America 2024 report:

  1. Baby boomers report the highest average vitality, while Gen Z reports the lowest. Gen Xers report vitality levels similar to Gen Z, while millennials report higher vitality.
  2. Gen Z’s mental and emotional health improved from 2022 to 2024. In 2024, 42% of Gen Z adults surveyed reported feeling alive and vital, up 11 percentage points from 2022.
  3. In 2024, 45% of Gen Z adults reported having skills and tools needed to live a healthy life, up 10 percentage points from 2022. The number of Gen Z adults reporting feeling in control of how they react to stress also increased from 2022.
  4. Men were more likely to report better physical and mental health than women. More than half of men, 55%, reported having excellent or very good mental health, while 39% of women said the same.
  5. Finances were the leading cause of stress in 2024. Of those surveyed, 39% reported feeling frequent stress due to finances in the past month.
