Biden-Harris administration announces action plan for LGBTQ mental health

The Biden-Harris administration published a fact sheet detailing new actions to protect LBGTQ communities across the United States, with several actions focused on mental health.

Almost half of LGBTQ youth reported seriously considering suicide in the past year, according to the fact sheet published June 8. To address this, HHS issued a behavioral healthcare advisory on transgender and gender diverse youth focusing on evidence-based practices for mental health providers.

HHS has also issued guidance to states and communities on how best to use federal funding for LGBTQ youth mental health services, including funding from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Meanwhile, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration released the LGBTQI+ Family Support Grant, which will allocate $1.7 million in federal funds to programs helping families affirm and support their LGBTQ child and lower mental health risks.
