5 states with the most, fewest depressed adults

Hawaii has the lowest number of depressed adults in the country, while West Virginia has the highest, according to an analysis released Sept. 12 by personal finance website WalletHub.

To determine the rankings, WalletHub compared states across emotional and physical well-being, work environment and community environment.

Here are the states with the most and fewest depressed adults, according to recent data:

Lowest depression rates:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Florida
  3. California
  4. Maryland (tie)
  5. South Dakota (tie)

Highest depression rates:

  1. West Virginia
  2. Kentucky
  3. Vermont
  4. Tennessee
  5. Arkansas
