5 fastest-growing mental health diagnoses

Mental health medical claims rose 83% from 2019 to 2023, according to a report from LexisNexis Risk Solutions. 

In the report, published May 15, the information and analytics firm examined deidentified claims data. Insurance claims for mental health diagnoses rose 11% from 2022 to 2023, according to the report. 

The analysis found claims related to ADHD are climbing among all age groups. Among adults 18-34, the number of patients with an ADHD diagnosis rose by 61% from 2019 to 2023, and claims rose by 101%. Among adults 45-64, the number of patients with ADHD rose by 45%, and claims were up by 70%. 

Among adults 65 and older, ADHD diagnoses were up 40%, and claims were up 60% from 2019 to 2023.

  1. Stress
    Patients: up 50%
    Claims: up 86% 

  2. Developmental Disorders
    Patients: up 34%
    Claims: up 75% 

  3. Anxiety
    Patients: up 34%
    Claims: up 72% 

  4. Depression
    Patients: up 25%
    Claims: up 52%
