$30M mental health program shuts down in Los Angeles, $15M returned to state

A mental health program in Los Angeles focused on providing care to individuals in vulnerable or crisis situations closed, after only using half of its $30 million in grant money, according to a July 31 report from the Los Angeles Times.

The program received $30 million from the tax on millionaires to fund mental health programs, but the grants expired in June. The program failed to spend an estimated $15 million before the expiration date, which will now be returned to the state.

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health had the option to use its own funds to preserve the program, but department officials decided against it, claiming they were “underwhelmed by the teams’ performance,” according to the report.
