To determine the rankings, Onyx analyzed 2023 data from Mental Health America on factors including the prevalence of major depression in youths, the number of students identifying with emotional disturbance and the number of students with a substance use disorder. Each factor was given a weight of 10 points, which was used to determine each state’s final score.
Oregon earned an overall score of 31.18. By comparison, New Jersey, the highest-ranked state, earned a 70.79.
