One in 2 people will develop a mental disorder in their lifetime, according to new research from Brisbane, Australia-based University of Queensland and Boston-based Harvard Medical School.
The research, published July 30 in The Lancet, pulled from data from more than 150,000 adults across 29 countries between 2001 and 2022 from the WHO's World Mental Health Survey initiative. Results from the data showed that 46.4 percent of men and 53.1 percent of women developed a mental disorder by age 75.
Women were most likely to have depression, a specific phobia or post-traumatic stress while men were most likely to have alcohol abuse, depression or a specific phobia. Meanwhile, mental disorders were most likely to develop earlier in life, with the peak age of onset being 15 years old.
