SAMHSA ups limits on incentives for SUD patients

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will increase the dollar amount of incentives provided to patients receiving treatment for substance use disorder.

In a bulletin published in January, the agency said it will raise the limit of SAMHSA grant funds that can be used per patient per year on incentives to $750, up from the previous limit of $75 per year.

Contingency management is an intervention in which patients with a substance use disorder receive rewards for abstaining from drug use or for engaging in other desired behaviors. The program is especially effective for treating stimulant use disorder, according to SAMHSA.

Rewards given using SAMHSA funding must be items, vouchers or gift cards, not cash payments.
