SAMHSA deputy secretary exits role

Art Kleinschmidt, PhD, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, is departing his role for another position within the administration, HHS officials confirmed to Becker’s on Dec. 12.

Christopher Carroll, SAMHSA’s Deputy Assistant Secretary, will assume the duties of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and continue to lead the agency’s work to treat mental illness and substance use disorders, according to HHS officials.

Dr. Kleinschmidt, an addiction counselor, in 2017 was appointed as a senior adviser for substance abuse at SAMHSA.
