New York plans Medicaid overhaul: 3 behavioral health changes to note

CMS approved New York state's request for a sweeping Medicaid waiver Jan. 9, which will put $7.5 billion over three years to the state's healthcare system.

The waiver includes several programs meant to bolster behavioral health funding, care coordination and the healthcare workforce. Here are five things to know:

  1. New York will establish social care networks designed to integrate health, behavioral and social services, and improve access to comprehensive substance use disorder treatment.

  2. The waiver includes several investments in the state's healthcare workforce, including a loan repayment program for psychiatrists and other types of healthcare professionals practicing in underserved areas.

  3. New York will increase and sustain Medicaid payment rates for behavioral health services as part of the funding package, in addition to payments for obstetrics and primary care.
