Nebraska bill to expand mental health services advances

New legislation in Nebraska would implement a new payment framework for behavioral health and substance misuse providers, which could expand mental health services in the state, StarHerald reported March 29.

Legislative Bill 276 would allow eligible providers to obtain daily or monthly reimbursements for specific treatments, which would then allow providers flexibility to hire more staff at their facilities and provide timely care.

The legislation seeks to help expand outpatient, substance abuse, mental health crises, mental health screenings, psychiatric rehabilitation, peer support, family support and counseling services.

The bill was passed unanimously by the Senate to advance, despite its delay as part of a filibuster due to opposition to another bill that would ban transgender youth in the state from accessing certain types of healthcare.
