How Medicaid cuts could affect mental healthcare,  state-by-state

The share of Medicaid beneficiaries with a mental illness or substance use disorder and the

number of people receiving treatment varies by state, according to a report from mental health advocacy group Inseparable.

The report, published in June, details the potential effects of proposed Medicaid cuts. Medicaid covers 1 in 3 adults with mental illness, according to KFF, and nearly half of adults with opioid use disorder.

In May, the House passed a bill that would cut Medicaid funding by nearly $800 billion over 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office estimates 7.8 million people would lose Medicaid coverage under the House version of the bill.

The Senate introduced a version of the budget package that would include even steeper cuts to the program.
