CMS proposes bump for inpatient psychiatric Medicare payments

Inpatient psychiatric facilities could see $70 million more in Medicare payments in 2025.

CMS issued its proposed payment rates for inpatient psychiatric facilities in 2025 on March 28. The agency pitched a 2.7% increase in Medicare payments in the Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Prospective Payment System. Overall, CMS estimates facilities will see a 2.6% increase in payments in 2025 relative to 2024, accounting for updated outlier payment thresholds.

The agency proposed a 1.9% overall increase in payments to inpatient psychiatric facilities in 2023.

CMS also proposed upping payments per treatment for electroconvulsive therapy. The proposed rule would increase payments per treatment for ECT to $660 in 2025, up from $386 in 2024.

The proposed rule also includes provisions requiring inpatient psychiatric facilities to submit patient-level quality data on a quarterly, rather than yearly, basis. Facilities would also be required to report the frequency with which patients visit an emergency department within 30 days of being discharged from the facility.
