California governor signs order to address men’s mental health, ‘loneliness epidemic’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to address rising suicide rates and social disconnection among the population, according to a July 30 news release.

Here are three notes:

  1. The order aims to reconnect men and boys with education and workforce opportunities by promoting participation in service opportunities, workforce training and mental health initiatives. “Historic lows” show that 1 in 9 men aged 25-54 are not working or seeking employment, and college enrollment and completion rates have decreased significantly over the past decade.
  1. $20 million was awarded through the California Apprenticeship Council Training Funds to support apprenticeship training in the building trades. The initiative aims to create and expand debt-free pathways that do not require a four-year college degree, boosting both individual livelihoods and the broader economy.
  1. The order also aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, for which boys and men are far less likely to seek treatment. With almost 80% of violent crimes being committed by men, the effects extend beyond the individual, contributing to increased rates of mental health conditions, drug use and crime.
