8 mental health crisis stats to know from the National Association of Counties

Here are eight data points from research released by the National Association of Counties' commission on mental health and well-being May 11:

  1. Seventy-five percent of counties reported an increase in incidence of behavioral health conditions in the last year.
  2. Eighty-nine percent of counties reported an increase in incidence of behavioral health conditions in the last five years.
  3. Sixty-seven percent of counties reported that youth behavioral health conditions are "definitely a problem" or "very prevalent and/or severe."
  4. Seventy-four percent of counties listed financial costs as a barrier to expanding access to behavioral health services.
  5. Seventy-one percent of counties cited lack of direct service providers as a barrier for behavioral health services.
  6. Eighty percent reported that they incurred associated costs for behavioral health in the legal system.
  7. Seventy-seven percent indicated there are associated costs in law enforcement.
  8. Fifty-four percent reported associated costs in the health system and hospitals.
