UHS' behavioral health president among its top 5 highest-paid execs

Matthew Peterson, executive vice president and president of behavioral health for King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, is the fifth highest-paid executive of the organization. 

Mr. Peterson joined UHS and began leading its behavioral health division in 2019. Prior to joining the health system, he served as the senior vice president and COO for Optum. 

UHS has a large behavioral health sector spanning 39 states, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. It comprises over 330 inpatient facilities and more than 55,000 employees. 

Along with the rest of the organization's execs, Mr. Peterson saw a hefty pay cut last year following UHS' drop in net income.

Here's a breakdown of his compensation at UHS in 2022:

  • Salary: $666,922
  • Stock awards: $994,015
  • Option awards: $993,990
  • Change in pension value and nonqualified deferred compensation earnings: $37,402 
  • Other compensation: $19,216
  • Total 2022 compensation: $2,711,545
  • $1,236,188 decrease from 2021 ($3,947,733)
