The health system has submitted a certificate of need for the new facility. If approved, the University of Michigan’s board of regents must sign off on the facility, according to the Journal.

The health system is proposing building the facility at the former site of Lansing Eastern High School. Sparrow Health acquired the site from the Lansing Board of Education in 2018, the Journal reported. Hospital officials said they chose the site for a psychiatric hospital because of its proximity to Sparrow Health’s main hospital campus.

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) Health acquired Lansing-based Sparrow Health in 2023.
