Tennessee eyes new site for planned psych hospital

Tennessee is considering building a planned psychiatric hospital in Eastdale after pausing its expansion plans following a historic archaeological review of the original site in Chattanooga, Local 3 News reported May 27.

The state’s letter of intent is not a guarantee of Eastdale becoming the final location.

Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute is a psychiatric hospital that serves 52 counties in Eastern Tennessee. The state had initially proposed expanding the facility in Chattanooga but faced pushback from local advocates who opposed additional construction after evidence of human habitation dating back 12,000 years was found nearby.
