States with the most private equity-owned mental health, substance use facilities

More than 1 in 4 mental health outpatient and residential facilities in Colorado are owned by private equity, according to data from the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nationwide, 6% of mental health facilities and 7% of addiction treatment facilities are owned by private equity firms. 

A few states, including Araknsas, Hawaii and Rhode Island, have no identified private equity activity in the behavioral health space. 

Here are the states with the highest concentrations of private-equity owned mental health and addiction treatment facilities: 

Behavioral health: 

1. Colorado: 26.5%

2. Texas: 23.90%

3. North Carolina: 23.0%

4. Illinois: 11.1% 

5. Minnesota: 10.6% 

T-6. Florida: 10.30% 

T-6. Massachusetts: 10.3%

8. Virginia: 9.3% 

9. Georgia: 9% 

10. Alabama: 8.1% 

 

Substance use treatment facilities: 

1. Virginia: 22.1% 

2. Alabama: 19.3% 

3. Tennessee: 18.2%

4. Ohio: 17.6% 

5. Kentucky: 15.7%

6. Pennsylvania: 14.3% 

7. Idaho: 14.8% 

8. Louisiana: 14.1% 

9. Washington, D.C.: 12.5% 

10. North Carolina: 9.6%
