Brown University Health’s Newport (R.I.) Hospital will open an inpatient behavioral health unit for adolescent patients in early 2026.

The eight-bed unit will provide short-term stabilization, assessment and treatment services for patients ages 12 to 18. Newport Hospital is collaborating with Riverside, R.I.-based Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital on the project.

The unit is expected to open in the first quarter of next year and will be the county’s first acute behavioral health facility for youth. Hospital leaders said they expect to serve more than 240 patients annually, according to a Dec. 16 news release.

The new unit is supported by more than $5 million in donations, including a $1 million gift from retired medical professionals Peggy and James Nolan, MD. The unit will be named in their honor.
