Greenville, S.C.-based Prisma Health is planning to double its inpatient behavioral health capacity through the construction of a new $138 million hospital in Easley, S.C.
Four things to know:
1. The health system broke ground on the 134,621-square-foot hospital May 19. The facility will replace Prisma’s existing 65-bed Marshall I. Pickens Hospital in Greenville.
2. Once completed in 2027, the hospital will double the system’s inpatient behavioral health capacity and quadruple the number of beds available for pediatric patients.
3. The project is backed by $100 million in funding from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
4. The new hospital comes amid rising inpatient behavioral health rates in the region. Last year, more than 1,000 patients were transported to facilities as far as the coast due to a lack of available beds, according to a May 19 news release.
