Lurie Children’s adds psych beds for patients with autism, intellectual disabilities

Chicago-based Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital is expanding its inpatient psychiatric unit with four beds uniquely designed for youth with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The purpose-built unit features  soft flooring, padded surfaces, sound-dampening materials, a sensory gym and room, respite spaces and specialized patient rooms. It will be staffed by 20 clinicians, including psychiatrists, ABA specialists and case managers, according to a news release shared with Becker’s

The expansion aims to address a statewide shortage of inpatient services for youths with complex behavioral and developmental needs, according to the release. It is supported by $4.5 million in capital funding from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
