Carbondale-based Southern Illinois Healthcare is planning a $20 million upgrade to its inpatient mental health facility.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board granted unanimous approval to the project, according to a May 7 news release. The system will modernize the SIH Mulberry Center in Harrisburg, Ill., adding 12 new medical-psychiatric inpatient beds.

The expansion will bring the center’s capacity from 30 to 42. The center often operates at full capacity, leaving nearly 700 individuals without care, according to the news release.

The project is funded in part through state and federal grants.
