Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health opened Belle Mead, N.J.-based Carrier Clinic’s $40 million, 43,000-square-foot expansion project to expand care for children and adolescents facing mental health crises.
This expansion comes as Carrier Clinic has seen a nearly 30% increase in recent years in the number of youths admitted for treatment for mental illness or substance use disorder, or both, according to a June 8 news release from the system.
Here are three things to know:
- The expansion allows the clinic to treat patients as young as 7 years old, down from the previous minimum age of 12.
- The project adds 52 inpatient beds for youths. The expansion also includes multi-sensory rooms, The Cohen Community Resource and Education Center as a family resource and training center, and a medical staff suite for teaching.
- State legislators secured $10 million in state funds, and The Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation provided a $10 million grant to create The Cohen Community Resource & Education Center.
