Tampa General forms partnership to address opioid crisis

Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital partnered with Central Florida Behavioral Health to treat patients struggling with opioid use in Hillsborough County.

The partnership will form a mobile unit program alongside Infectious Disease Elimination Act Exchange Tampa, according to an Oct. 18 news release. The unit will care for patients who either do not typically qualify for treatment in the community or are unable to access treatment.

Using the mobile unit, Tampa General and CFBHN will offer services including administering buprenorphine, offering HIV and Hepatitis C screenings and treatments, treating general and injection-related wounds, providing referrals to addiction treatment programs and distributing Narcan.

Since its inception, IDEA Tampa has treated more than 1,400 patients, along with reversing approximately 500 overdoses per month and treating 17 cases of HIV, the release said.
