States with highest rates of fentanyl deaths

Deaths from fentanyl were 24 times higher in 2022 than in 2013, according to a May 28 report from USA Facts, a nonprofit organization that conducts data analysis.

The synthetic opioid caused 73,838 deaths in 2022, the last year for which data is available

West Virginia had the highest rate of age-adjusted fentanyl deaths of any state — 42.3% higher than in Delaware, the state with the next-highest rate. 

Here are the 11 states with the highest rates of deaths from fentanyl: 

1. West Virginia: 67 deaths per 100,000 residents 

2. Delaware: 47.1 deaths per 100,000 residents 

3. District of Columbia: 46.4 deaths per 100,000 residents 

4. Maine: 44.7 deaths per 100,000 residents 

5. Tennessee: 42.2 deaths per 100,000 residents 

6. Vermont: 38.8 deaths per 100,000 residents 

7. Kentucky: 38.5 deaths per 100,000 residents 

8. Ohio: 35.9 deaths per 100,000 residents 

9. Connecticut: 34.3 deaths per 100,00 residents 

10. (tie) North Carolina: 33.2 deaths per 100,000 residents 

 10. (tie) South Carolina: 33.2 deaths per 100,000 residents
