The study was conducted by Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, and the Oregon Department of Corrections. It evaluated more than 18,000 individuals who had been released from an Oregon prison between 2014 and 2017.
Researchers evaluated fatal and nonfatal overdoses.
Results further showed that the risk of overdose was double during the first two weeks after release from prison. Women were found to have a greater risk, according to the study.
